I grew up in a home where my mother had bipolar disorder and my dad was an alcoholic. I was 17 when my mother was diagnosed, my brother was 7 and I had no support from any family, except my Uncle Peter. My mother was in and out of hospitals for over twenty years and attempted suicide 3 times, again with nowhere to turn I fought for my mother all the way. In the meantime by brother, David age 10 found our mother half dead on the floor after attempting suicide after she drank drano, he was never the same after that! My brother suffered with depression and self medicated, when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer he could not handle it, even though he fought hard to get and stay clean and sober he died on September 12, 1993 at the age of 27 from alcoholic hepatitis. My mother died two years later almost to the day from Breast cancer. Because of my background my husband and I became foster parents to our daughter Emily who was diagnosed with major depression, my son has also been diagnosed with depression and my wonderful Uncle Peter who was there for me along with his wife my Aunt Janice took he's own life after his wife passed away from cancer.
