Citizens Rooted Against Duke Energy
Organized by: John Kane
Citizens Rooted Against Duke Energy seeks to stop the infringement, disregard, and disrespect for citizen's property by government subsidized, monopolistic public utilities.
We raise awareness for and support individuals who's property rights and the nature that exists on and around citizen's property are being exploited or violated by Duke Energy.
Citizens Rooted Against Duke Energy was formed in June, 2015 by John Kane Jr., a resident of Raleigh, NC. Duke Energy sought to cut down a weeping willow tree in his family's front yard. Despite four offers to have the tree trimmed by a licensed arborist so that the tree would not be a risk to the power lines for many years to come, Duke Energy filed a lawsuit against John and his family in May, 2015.
John, despite having no legal training, represented his family in a preliminary injunction hearing against Duke Energy and their high powered law firm, Parker Poe, to save the willow tree and won (see coverage here: http://abc11.tv/1QVd7tO)
Through that process there was an outpouring of emails and messages from citizens across the state of North Carolina who had been victims of Duke Energy's imperialistic overreach. Hundreds of pictures came in showing where Duke had come through a family's yard, chopping down their trees and leaving stumps, and in many cases the tree itself, behind for the homeowner to deal with themselves. The expense of having a stump removed, not to mentioned replacing it with a bush or sod, can easily be over $1,000 for a family.
Inspired by the number of people who have been victimized and exploited by Duke Energy, Citizens Rooted Against Duke Energy was formed to ensure that individuals know that they do have rights when it comes to their property - even if Duke Energy has an easement - and, that they do not have to fight a multi-billion dollar company alone.
With your help, together we can hold Duke Energy accountable for their unethical business practices and force them to be better corporate citizens and treat their customers and the environment with respect.
