THE STORY:

I went to the airport gate to see my son off to school {EWU) the day after Christmas in 1996. When I didn't see him, I called to see if he was still with my husband. I was asked to come downstairs and when I got there I was asked to sit down. At the same time, my daughter called. (Renee): “Daddy was in an accident and had to be taken to the trauma center.” (Me): "Where is Sinclair?" (Renee): “I don't know.” In that moment, I didn't know what to think. I learned my son had died on impact. My husband died at the hospital. With God’s grace, I made it through the days ahead. However, when the normal schedule resumed, I was still a zombie. Everything I did was with the help of prescription medications. Trust me, I hit rock bottom, financially and spiritually. I buried my husband and son on December 31, 1996. - Hester Addison-Benitez, Founder of Stop Impaired Driving

We all fear that phone call- the one that changes your life forever, the one that devastates you, and the one that challenges your faith on many levels. It was the morning after Christmas when James Robert Addison, my husband, the love of my life, and Rodrick Sinclair McClure, my loving son, were killed by a drunk driver in Las Vegas, Nevada. The days ahead were unimaginable, but with the help of family members and friends, I was able to bear the pain. Sinclair, an amazing athlete at Eastern Washington University (EWU), was well known and loved for his humor and positive attitude. James was well known for his smooth and calm demeanor. Even though I had an amazing support system, I was overwhelmed with a loss that could never be replaced. The pain of losing them both at the same time made me not want to continue living.

As time went on, I started working with an organization called STOP DUI in Las Vegas where I shared my story as inspiration to others. Since moving back to my hometown (Rock Hill, SC), I was blessed to meet like-minded individuals who believed in what I was doing. We came together and formed STOP Impaired Driving, a grassroots organization who provides financial and mental support for victim's families and educate the community about the impact of driving under the influence. I'm a believer that we are carried through difficult times on the prayers and inspiration of others. Please join me in persuading others to stop drinking getting drunk and driving. The life you save may be your own, or the life of your family.

Today, I have devoted my life's work to helping victims of innocent drunk driving crashes through the non-profit organization STOP Impaired Driving. It provides DUI education programs to DUI offenders and the communities - at - large in an effort to prevent DUIs. It gives athletic scholarships to high school seniors and we want to expand to help youth who want to play sports, or attend sport camps whose family cannot afford to send them. It is our intention to be there for anyone who has lost a love one or has been impacted by an impaired driver in the surrounding counties. With the help of family, friends, and coaches, I am honored to say that the 1st Annual "Hot Rod McClure Basketball Classic" will take place on May 13-15 2016, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
