You have probably heard news stories about Uganda’s notorious “Kill the Gays” bill, or about the anti-gay laws in Russia that gave rise to the controversy surrounding the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
What is often not covered is the connection to U.S.-based extremists like Scott Lively who are behind these efforts. Lively was an architect of the Ugandan "Kill the Gays" bill, and he went on a 50-city tour of Russia advocating for the criminalization of speech and advocacy in support of gay rights. In the past, he also wrote a book blaming gay people for the Holocaust, and he is now actively working to deprive LGBTI people across the globe of their fundamental human rights.
Lively’s actions have real consequences. The climate of hate he helped create and the program of persecution he has pursued in Uganda has resulted in the raids, arrests, detention, and ill-treatment of LGBTI people--and now, the signing of the draconian Anti-Homosexuality Bill.
Help us Stop Scott Lively and stop the hate.
To Stop Scott Lively, our organizations, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), worked together to file the first-of-its-kind case against Lively, where we secured a historic ruling establishing persecution on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity as crimes against humanity. This significant ruling will help LGBTI people around the world. Now the litigation is moving into a critical phase, and that's where you come in.
Join with us in our effort to Stop Scott Lively by making a tax-deductible gift to help fund this vital litigation. Any gift you make is appreciated. Your donation will help contribute to the expenses below:
$10 - Fifteen gifts at this level will pay for the cost of serving ONE subpoena on a witness.
$20 - Fifty gifts at this level will pay for the costs associated with one deposition, a device in U.S. litigation to take the testimony of a party or witness out of court as part of the "discovery" process.
$50 - Thirty-four gifts will fund one round-trip ticket to Uganda for attorneys to meet with clients and witnesses in the case.
$100 - Thirty-five gifts at this level pay for travel and logistics for a key witness from Uganda for deposition in the United States.
$500 - Ten gifts at this level will fund the costs associated with retaining one expert witness.
Another way you can help us is by sharing this campaign with your friends via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest and including the hashtag #stopscottlively. You can build momentum around this case and fight with CCR, SMUG and all those affected by Lively's hate.
