Meet Ricky! He was diagnosed with CHI two weeks after his birth in November 2016. Ricky's mommy pricks his feet daily to do glucose checks and provides medication twice a day. His meds have recently been increased due to his weight gain, and unfortunately because his glucose levels have not stabilized. The funding needed for research directly impacts Ricky's life. At Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, before his original discharge, Ricky's blood was drawn for a genetics test. His mommy and daddy also gave their blood in hopes of determining which gene triggered this rare disorder. In March his family was told the gene triggered has yet to even be discovered, and that his parents' blood could not even be tested yet because doctors just don't know what they're looking for. With research, more CHI genes are discovered. There are currently 12 KNOWN genes that carry CHI. Ricky's gene is not one of those 12. That's why we need funding! The more studies done, the more genes discovered and Ricky's blood, and the blood of all CHI patients, can be tested again so we can find a source! The specific gene can answer so many questions we have, potentially even how long his symptoms will last until his body can adjust to the disorder. CHI International personally messaged us and asked if we would start a team, because Ricky's face is one of many featured on the #StopTheLows campaign. Even $1 is helpful, because every dollar raised will have twice the impact, as the university will match every dollar we raise up to $50,000! The money we raise will go towards a research grant advancing HI treatments. Ricky's family and friends are welcome to join his team. Let's make a difference so he and his sugar friends can get better! Thank you!
