RAVEN RESPECTING ABORIGINAL VALUES AND ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS via Crowdrise
June 06, 2013
Sure they're bad for the environment, for human health, and for wildlife, but we rarely stop to wonder if the Alberta tar sands are in fact unconstitutional.
But the constitutional standing of the tar sands -- one of the world's largest and most carbon-intensive energy projects -- is just what's at stake in a treaty rights claim the Beaver Lake Cree Nation (BLCN) is bringing against the Governments of Alberta and Canada in a case that promises to be one of the most significant legal and constitutional challenges to the megaproject seen in Canada to date. ~ from Carol Linnit's DeSmogCanada post.
The Beaver Lake Cree may be the planet's best hope at making a serious dent in the tar sands - that nasty mess in Canada that threatens to push the planet past the tipping point for climate change, and feeds all the pipelines like Keystone and Kinder Morgan. They've been greenlit to take Canada and Alberta to court - putting the nation on trial for allowing large scale industry to destroy the land, water, animals and air, and trample over their treaty rights. And guess what? That's unconstitutional. But it takes money to fight big oil bullies. So we're working to level the playing field. The Beaver Lake Cree's line in the tar sand is one we can all stand behind!
A NEW REPORT OUT FROM SHELL OFFERS SOME JAW-DROPPING STATS THAT EXPOSE TAR SANDS INDUSTRY RHETORIC - animals will be pushed to extinction and emissions will cause acid rain and destroy lakes. Would YOU like to live there?
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Please share this with everyone you know! Really - we mean everyone! This is a huge issue, and every person on the planet deserves a chance to know there's something being done.
Let's face it - it is wrong for corporations and governments to take advantage of populations that live in these areas - they destroy the environment, rob the people that live their of their livelihood, culture and introduce potential life-threatening chemicals to the air. water and land. And we all live on this big ball together - so if their water and air is polluted, it stands to reason that the rest of us suffer too.
Supporting this legal action is one way that we can have a chance for a liveable planet. Now and for our children.
