THE STORY:

Friends,

I need your help raising money for Story Pirates. I agreed to run the New York City Marathon on November 4th to support the Story Pirates and people are asking me all sorts of questions, like:

Q: Why did you agree to run 26.2 miles when there are perfectly good Subways in NYC?  A: To raise money for the Story Pirates of course!  That, and I lost a bet.

Q: Who are the Story Pirates? A: The Story Pirates are a group of insanely talented actors, musicians and comedians who go into underfunded grade schools and get kids excited about their own ideas.  They translate kids stories into performance. Check them out here: storypirates.org. They change lives for the better!

Q: What do you know about creative writing and performance?  A: Not much (see this e-mail) but I believe Jon Stewart, Conan O'Brien and Peter McNerney when they say the Story Pirates are awesome.

Q: Wait, Peter McNerney?  You mean your Brother?  A: Yes, that Peter McNerney. Peter is not just a Story Pirate, he is the casting director for the Story Pirates.

Q: So by helping you raise money while you run the marathon I can also help a great organization AND Peter?  That's amazing!  A: Yes, it's a McNerney brothers grand slam.

Q: What do I get? Remind me why I'd give you money to go for a jog? How does this work?

A: The NYC marathon has given the Story Pirates space in the NYC marathon - they give those spaces to those willing to raise money for them. In return for your donation, you get:

  • Satisfaction: The money will allow the Story Pirates to set up creative writing program in a school that would otherwise not be able to teach creative writing.  Remember what it was like to have good teachers?
  • Schadenfreude: Do you like suffering? Have you seen me sweat?  Of course you have, I sweat when I wake up, toast bread, drink coffee, think too hard, walk and even sit still. Can you imagine what will happen over the course of 26.2 miles?  That HAS to be worth a couple bucks to see.

Q: Helping kids, helping Peter and seeing you suffer?  That's actually pretty compelling,  how do I help?   Awesome- Click the donate button in the top right to help now.

Yup...he's nuts, but it's worth it to see Michael run through Brooklyn and Queens while cursing like a story pirate. 5 years ago

I love your pitch. (Especially since it is impossible to execute, what with the Min.$10 and all ;-) Nonetheless I love the 2 birds 1 stone approach. Good luck! 5 years ago
