BENEFITING: WATSON UNIVERSITY
We successfully raised $10,000 and used that money for operations supporting our poets. Now, we want to reach $20,000 for a very specific goal. Read more here!
Strength of Doves
Represents artists who use spoken word poetry for social change. Our artists perform on topics of sexual assault, race, identity, sexuality, environmentalism, and more. They put on dynamic performances which engage audiences in topics that are otherwise difficult to discuss. They teach workshops that dive deeper into these topics and support the “tough conversations” in venues across the country.
Are currently a hotbed of social justice issues. Students are protesting for change and colleges are struggling to find ways to connect to activist student bodies. At the same time, campuses have large budgets for bringing in entertainers. They regularly bring in comedians, hypnotists, and poets to perform.
We want to connect our social justice poets to these performance opportunities on college campuses.
Our poets have already performed on hundreds of campuses throughout the US. Now, we want to be the driving force that gets our poets into more schools more quickly.
The best way to do that is through the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) and the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA), two organizations that run regional and national conferences throughout the year where colleges and universities book performers for their schools.
We are raising money to support our social justice artists in showcasing at the NACA and APCA conferences, where colleges and universities will hire them for school performances and workshops. Last year, our pilot year, we raised $10,000 for Strength of Doves operations and brought one artistic duo to two NACA regional conferences. The duo will earn over $30,000 from NACA gigs this year and perform for over 500 college and university students.
This year, we want a higher impact return on our investment, which means (for the same $10,000) we want to bring more artists to NACA and for the first time bring artists to APCA. We have already done the research on how best to support these artists, and piloted this program. Now, we just need to raise the money.
