THE STORY:

ORIGINAL GOALS OF $5,000, $7,000 & $8,000 HAVE BEEN MET!!

Thanks to some donations mailed directly to Transitions, OVER $11,000 has been raised!

While studying abroad and seeing the world this past semester, I realized how truly lucky I have been throughout my life so far. When I came home from my time in Europe, I told my parents that I wanted to do a good deed that would make a difference in the lives of other people. However, there was a twist - the cause was not to be random, I wanted it to be something that was close to my heart. I come from a very giving and charitable family, so after some conversation and thought, my mom and dad unsurprisingly gave me permission to begin this quest. I decided to start a fundraiser that would donate all profits to the North Shore LIJ Health Care System/Transitions of Long Island. If you're wondering why this is the cause I chose, my story is written below...

On April 1st, 2013, a little over a year ago, my life almost changed forever. I learned that my dad had suffered from a stroke during a small surgical procedure and was in the ICU wing of the hospital. My dad, who is the most determined, selfless, charitable, caring, loving, hard-working person I have ever known, was barely able to talk, let alone think. His entire right side was immobile - he was unable to move his right arm and leg, and he was seeing double out of both eyes. At first, this of course was very scary to my dad who had always been blessed with good health, but he was extremely grateful to have survived and he knew he was going to be okay.

After a few weeks in the hospital in NYC and some in-patient rehabilitation in Glen Cove, he began to make great progress and was happily dismissed. He was glad to be in the comfort of his own home, but he knew he still had a long road ahead of him. From May-September, he spent many hours a day in an outpatient rehab facility, Transitions of Long Island, where he continued to work on regaining his memory and strength. Transitions of Long Island is one of the fantasitc Rehabilitation Programs through the North Shore LIJ Health Care System. The staff at this facility continued to be supportive on a daily basis, even when days were frustrating and hard for my dad. Day by day, my family and I watched my dad get stronger and become himself once again.

A year later, my dad is walking, talking, thinking, driving, working, and more with little-to-no complication! The doctors said he made a miraculous recovery, and that it's almost unheard of to be doing as well as he is doing only a year after suffering a stroke. We as a family are so lucky and thankful that my dad was able to make a FULL RECOVERY from this arbitrary trauma. Whether you knew my dad before this incident or you’re just meeting him for the first time, you would never know that he went through the worst year of his life. My dad is back in action - his humor, quick-wit, intelligence, generosity, and personality have not changed a bit. He deserves to enjoy his life to the fullest, and he can! He is a bionic man, a hero, and there is nothing he cannot do. This experience, although not an enjoyable one, taught me that one of life’s most important lessons is to never give up. The one thing that remained constant throughout this past year is that my dad was a fighter, he continuously stayed positive and he never gave up.

To sum it up, I realized that it was not too late to give back to the extraordinary facilities and medicial professionals who spent their time nursing my dad back to health. Aside from the endless amounts of love and support from our family at home, the staff at Transitions of Long Island helped him return to his old self.

At this facility, each patient is paired up with a team of therapists, who specialize in treating patients with neurological conditions. These therapists work with each patient to set goals ensuring comfort and successful rehabilitation. The team may include physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists, in addition to neuropsychologists. Physiatrists, neurologists and pain management specialists are all easily accessible onsite if their services are needed. Additionally, the team will assist with self-care, mobility, transferring, speech & language, cognitive skills, social skills, counseling, support programs, and referrals.

Some people who survive a stroke are not as fortunate to have the same outcome that my dad did. However, the staff at Transitions is so patient and they truly want to help patients make strides and be the best they can be. Additionally, they help people cope with the devastation that a stroke causes. It is very difficult for people who were once so capable and independent to have to rely on others for help with basic activites of daily living. Transitions is also very supportive to caregivers and keeps family members a part of the healing process.

My dad was extremely fortunate to have made a full recovery after receiving the best care at Transitions of Long Island through the North Shore-LIJ Health Care System. Join me to raise money and awareness so that this incredible health care system can continue to provide the same excellent treatment to other stroke survivors.
