EVENT DATE: Aug 16, 2015
“Stronger than last year” is a new and improved team of 10 runners competing in the 2015 Falmouth Road Race to raise money for "He Also Had Five Daughters: the Jill McLean Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund.”
Alex, Tom, and William Taylor started the scholarship in 2010 as a tribute to their mother who passed away from acute myeloid leukemia (AML) six months after retiring from her position as professor at Simmons College and just before dedicating more of her time to writing a book that addressed the historical and persistent inequalities in access to education through the lens of her own family narrative (see https://www.crowdrise.com/had5daughters).
The specific mission of He Also Had Five Daughters is to provide financial support to young women pursuing an undergraduate education. To date, we have raised approximately $64,000 towards establishing an endowment of $100,000 in Jill Taylor’s name at Simmons College.
The fundraiser is named “Stronger than last year” for three reasons.
1. We hope to raise $25,000, which is significantly more than last year.
2. We have an international team with 7 new members
3. Alex lost to his younger brother last year. This will not happen again (if you ask Alex); or, this is very likely to happen again (if you ask Will).
Please see www.crowdrise.com/had5daughters for more information about He Also Had Five Daughters’ origin and goals.
Sam McLean: Jill’s younger sister who is coming from New Zealand and promises a pre-race haka.
Alex and Clarinda Taylor: Clarinda was competitive last year. She was coached by Alex; lucky her.
William Taylor: last year’s team winner. He’s 6’4”, has long strides, and clearly benefited from the heart rate monitor Alex gifted him.
Vanessa Taylor (Tom Taylor still sidelined): Vanessa began running the Falmouth Road Race in high school. She will keep things honest but will craftily know when and where to pick up the pace. She outfitted the 2014 team with bold kiwi green color race shirts and will soon reveal her design for the 2015 shirts.
Devon Angelini: Vanessa’s personal cheerleader and best friend. Also a Taylor family favorite. She is a middle child and does not like to lose.
Banker White: Devon's older brother and team's most initmidating runner. He's the type of person who sets off a lot of red flags until you actually talk to him, reminding us all that looks can be deceiving. With regard to running, he is surprisingly light on his feet for a big guy.
Tod Hynes: Vanessa’s younger brother, and possibly the team member hungriest for glory after losing to Will and his 1 year old son (in stroller being pushed by Will) in a 5K earlier this spring. Of interest, Tod started a technology company to transform existing vehicles into hybrids, which means he's smart and efficient. He also captained the MIT football team (they have one). Watch out for this guy.
William (Bill) Rugg: Long time Taylor family friend and silver fox. Also a fundraising savant. He’s getting old; this makes him hungry.
Adam Nyborg (aka Nyborg the Cyborg): Adam is descending from the mountains of Franconia, NH to demonstrate the benefits of high altitude training. He is married to Jill McLennan Brewer, Jill Taylor’s goddaughter. Jill B would be with us were it not for Marcus Barack (how can he not be cool), her 4 month old baby.
Lynn Burns: A flying Owl in college (Rice), Lynn is our most (only) legitimate runner. She is training for her 8th marathon, has recorded a top 10 finish, and scared her husband into cycling. While most of us will be lining up with the 8-10 minute milers, she will be up front with the Kenyans.
Jon Whitcher: Hailing from the banks of the Rock River, the “Rockford Rocket” is secretive (refusing to divulge expected pace) and ruthless. Voted (by Will) “Most Likely to Study Course Beforehand.”
Brendan Hynes: Long time watcher, second time runner. He describes himself as a longshot for the clydesdale division (i.e. move out of the way once he gets going). We're happy he's on our team.
