BENEFITING: VOICES UNBROKEN
It is our belief that this telling of stories and sharing of dreams leads to individual and community growth. Participants in Voices UnBroken workshops develop self-expression skills through creative writing and discussion exercises, which enables them to constructively communicate in situations where they previously would not have had the confidence to speak up. They also learn that their voices have the power to change people's perceptions about them, in particular the adults who work with them, including teachers, social workers, corrections officers and staff in the facilities they're housed in.
Our participants are at the core of everything we do and every decision we make as an organization. We are inspired by their resilience and by the tremendous courage they share with us every time they put pencil to paper to share their truth. They have taught us invaluable lessons about transition and have instilled in us an unwavering hope for the future.
Join us in continuing to create opportunities for our young people to share their voices with the community during this time of organizational transition. Your valued support will maintain the structure we’ve built over the past 15 years and its growth under new leadership.
Below you will find an excerpt from Community Blueprint, a poem written by current Teaching Artists in honor of our Founder, Tory Sammartino, and Voices UnBroken’s 15th Anniversary. It reflects their experience in facilitating as well as their mission for youth to leave each workshops feeling empowered and most importantly, heard.
"it is needed / it is safe haven for 90 minutes / it is community-blueprint, reconstructing space with golf pencils and line breaks / it is urgent ... it is life-work / it is an answer to someone’s prayers / sometimes it is a prayer / it is revolution / it is freedom ... it is uncompromising / it is learning to compromise / it is the ear for bold, daring, often misunderstood, sometimes fragile, needed voice"
