I participated in my first and only marathon back in 2010 and it certainly wasn’t pretty. I vowed ‘NEVER AGAIN!’ So since then, I’ve been content with doing 5K’s, 10K’s, half marathons and sprint triathlons. I never felt the urge to try a full marathon again. But, when the opportunity to run with the Ainsley’s Angels charity team at the 43rd Marine Corps Marathon in October 2018 came up, AND to be able to run it pushing my special needs daughter, Maddie, I couldn’t let this chance slip by. Maddie is 10 years old, lives with spastic quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, has a seizure disorder, is non-verbal and is unable to sit, stand or walk on her own. This, however, has not stopped us from including her in everything we do. We take her on all of our family trips and adventures, both on the road and overseas. She enjoys horse riding, sledding, biking, swimming, hiking, baseball, and has even participated in races including triathlons with her 12 year old brother. Inclusion for Maddie is a big deal for us and that is why running with Ainsley’s Angels in October to spread the message of inclusion for all will be an honor. With your support, we can raise money for this great charity, earn our 3 running bibs (my friend Amy Drumheller will be helping us out) that will enable us to be part of this phenomenal race. And I promise, we will train hard to ensure that Maddie does not have to sit too long in her race chair and that we make it across the finish line in one piece!! Hopefully, we'll also have some of our friends running alongside us for back up! Fifty per cent of all funds raised go directly to our local Ainsley's Angels ambassador so we can continue to spread the message of inclusion throughout North Carolina! In case you've never heard of them, Ainsley's Angels of America aims to build awareness about America's special needs community through inclusion in all aspects of life. Serving as advocates to providing education and participating as active members in local communities, we believe everyone deserves to be included.
