BENEFITING: DENVER GRACE AND LIFE
Our vision is to inspire a renaissance in our city. We want to empower and equip our inner-city youth with a love of learning and knowledge by developing a library at our Compassion Center in Denver, Colorado. We serve a population that primarily speaks English as a second language (ESL). Often, by the time a student born in our neighborhood reaches high school they are at least one (if not many) grade levels behind in reading and writing. Our answer to this problem is to start helping them while they're young. We run an after school program two days a week. As part of our program, students read with leaders in small groups. Our heart in developing the student library will be to bolster this program.
Our desire is to see our community liberated from a cycle of poverty and all that accompanies living in the inner city, through learning. Because this is the case, we also want to develop a professional library where people from the community can come and learn using print and electronic resources. The possibilities for meeting the needs of our community through this effort are quite diverse and we look forward to serving our community in this way.
