Goal!!!! Join me in supporting a second student voice!
March 03, 2016
BENEFITING: Philadelphia Young Playwrights
EVENT DATE: Mar 11, 2016
This year, 2016 Young Voices Monologue Festival will feature the creative voices of 18 amazing young writers from the Greater Philadelphia Area. A gift of $250 sponsors one of these powerful pieces, and ensures that Philadelphia Young Playwrights can continue to put student voices center stage. Let's see if together we can hit $500 and sponsor two incredible student voices!
I am committing to raise $500 in order to sponsor a second piece in the festival written by a student at the High School for Creative and Performing Arts. In One Piece, we watch a character give her thoughts and opinions about body image, sexual orientation, race, and culture without thinking twice about her words - hitting home for us that we should think twice before we call ourselves an ally and perhaps question our presumptions a bit more often. Again, a topic that I think is becoming more crucial every day.
Our first goal of $250 has successfully sponsored a monologue from Penncrest High School. In this piece, Kickin' It, a young man sits at his desk at home attempting do his homework. While that sounds simple, the young man has ADD and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which makes focusing and formulating ideas a challenge. Personally, I find this piece not only powerful, but also the most authentic depiction of a young person struggling with these realities that I have seen. The struggle with challenges such as ADD and PTSD is real, and this is a voice and a story that needs to be heard far and wide.
If you would like to see just how powerful the performance of one of these monologues can be, check out a previous winner here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1aQZj_hGzE Even a gift of $10 helps me get one step closer to sponsoring these impactful pieces!
Let's pool our resources to support student voices! The Monologue Festival runs March 10-19th and you can get more information about public performances at www.phillyyoungplaywrights.org. Join me at a performance!
