EVENT DATE May 16, 2016

THE STORY:

Guten Tag, Hallo!

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page! I am extremely excited to say that I am studying abroad in Berlin, Germany this May. The purpose of this page is to help fund my time abroad and keep you in the loop about what I will be doing.

My team and I will be working alongside, Medibüro, an organization that provides medical assistance for refugees. We will work closely with Medibüro in order to aid their efforts in the smooth transition of newly arrived refugees. We will also be assisting at a refugee home in a place called Eschenelle. Though the focus of the trip is health related, I am also interested in witnessing firsthand the refugee crisis in Europe, developing relationships with people abroad, and using my own unique skills to serve. I already have a strong desire to assist the Syrian refugee population, and I hope this abroad experience will push me further towards this goal. Through my studies at Purdue and passion to connect with people, I hope this experience will be a window to more opportunities to working with the refugee population.

My heart for serving refugees has been over a year in the making now and extends beyond a ten day trip. It started with my Syrian friend that I met at Greyhouse, the coffee shop I am currently employed at. My friend became a regular customer at the shop, and through small conversations, I learned more about the war in Syria, more about his life, and the way the war has personally affected him and others. Before knowing him, I hardly knew a thing about the war or what was going on in the rest of the world for that matter. His story and his friendship became a bridge between the refugee crisis and myself. Because of awareness and friendships, I strongly desire to serve a population that desperately needs help and compassion. This abroad experience will challenge me and open my eyes to the urgency that is the refugee crisis.

Currently, I am taking an Arabic culture class; I hope to use what I am learning to better connect with Arab refugees. Though I do not know Arabic, I studied German in high school; finally I will be able to use my language skills in translating and communicating. As I develop relationships with refugees, I also hope to photograph the people I meet. I love photography and my passion is in documentary photography and portraits. I hope to use my skills to document my trip. Most importantly, I desire to tell the stories of these people and to bring out the individuals of this crisis. Though the people are currently refugees, this is not their only identity; I hope to reveal their personalities and help restore dignity and individuality through photography.

After the program ends, if funds allow, my hope is stay abroad for at least another week to continue to volunteer and serve the refugee population. I have contacted an organization called Youth with a Mission. YWAM is currently serving the refugee population in multiple countries in various ways. You can learn more at their website: http://ywameuroperefugeecircle.com. Currently, I am waiting for a response about where I can be of most help for them. I will update this page as I learn more.

I am thrilled to be going to Germany, though my hope is that it will not be a financial burden. The estimated cost of this trip is almost $4,000 before airfare. If you feel so compelled to contribute financially, I cannot express how thankful I would be. Finances aside, I also ask for prayer over this trip, my heart, and the people who have been affected by war and violence. I expect this trip to be challenging, yet impactful. As I arrive closer to my departure, I will keep you all updated.
