Suamico UMC Youth Group Assistant
Organized by: Eric Nelson
Our community-based youth group at SUMC is doing fantastic. We have 40+ kids consistently, and they are being guided with spiritual principles toward a well-adjusted future. Only 25% of the group is from our church. The vast majority are members of the broader community.
Here is what the SUMC Youth Group is about:
- We meet every Wednesday night during the school year
- We welcome kids 7th - 12th grade
- Once a month we do a mission
- Once a month we do a fun Christian activity
- Twice a month we help kids navigate through the turmoil of being a Christian teen in today’s society
Our group has grown 3-fold in the last 2 years. We feel like we’ve identified a big need in the community. We’d like to keep this momentum, and we need your help
Our volunteer youth leaders need the support of a part-time staff position. The Youth Group Coordinator will minister to the middle school kids--a growing group that needs its own approach-- and help with paperwork, organization, and making contacts. We estimate our first year costs to be $8,000 - for salary and materials - and we are asking the community to donate $5,000 of that.
Niki Petit, along with her husband Dominic, are the SUMC Youth Leaders. Niki says this about herself:
“I have been the Youth Group Leader for 15 years. I am a fierce supporter of teen programs. It is such a pivotal time in a person’s life and it can be fraught with challenges. I try to help youth navigate peer pressure, the ‘MTV’ generation, social demands, family conflicts and make a positive impact on society. We do this all while worshipping God and having loads of fun along the way!”
