Homelessness is a big issue that can be hard to fully comprehend for those of us fortunate enough to have never experienced it. But it is also a collection of smaller daily issues that we can both relate to and help address. Don't try to imagine being homeless, but imagine not being able to shower for weeks or not having access to a clean toilet. Now imagine how the lack of those things we take completely for granted contributes to the vicious cycle of indignities that is homelessness.
Lava Mae (http://lavamae.org/) is an inspiring organization with an innovative approach to tackling this piece of the homelessness puzzle. They repurpose retired transportation buses to create mobile hygiene centers to increase geographic coverage and limit overhead. And they practice "radical hospitality" with those they serve (called "guests") to build relationships and reinforce the dignity they are helping to restore. Finally, Lava Mae collaborates with other organizations to deliver access to the broad spectrum of services their guests may need beyond a hot shower.
Training for this fight, I look forward to a hot shower (and several Advil ;-) ) after every workout. Your donation to Lava Mae will help bring that simple pleasure to people who will appreciate it even more than you and I can imagine, and maybe even be the start of better things.
