Civil war had raged between the northern and southern halves of Sudan for over 19 years between the northern Arab tribes and southern African tribes, but the war soon effectively developed into a struggle between the Sudan People's Liberation Army and Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir's government. The war resulted in millions of southerners being displaced, starved, and deprived of education and health care, with almost two million casualties.
In 2011, the region of southern Sudan, which had been terrorized by President Omar al-Bashir's government, separated into an independent country known as South Sudan. The region of the Nuba Mountains, which is right on the border between North and South Sudan, was left as part of Sudan in the negotiations, leaving it to be continually attacked by Omar al-Bashir. George Clooney decided to visit the region and shine some light on the situation. Al-Bashir continues to terrorize civilians in the Nuba Mountains, Darfur, and other regions within Sudan. Omar al-Bashir is the only sitting head of state wanted for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
The Sentry, an initiative of Not On Our Watch, seeks to disrupt those who fund and profit from Africa’s deadly crimes against humanity.
