ABOVE & BEYOND CANCER's Fundraiser:

Sue Mixdorf is going to Peru!

THE STORY:

It was a Thursday almost 3 years ago and I was headed to get a routine physical for insurance. I felt great, the sun was shining and it would just be in and out…a formality. That “routine” physical resulted in my doctor finding a lump in my left breast, a “sizeable” lump to quote. Next started the whirlwind…an ultrasound and mammogram, being told they were 90% sure it was nothing but I could have it biopsied if I want…I want! The biopsy confirmed that it was Triple Negative breast cancer- a highly aggressive and recurring form of breast cancer that is only 20% of all breast cancers. (I am still convinced I would be dead today if I hadn’t had that biopsy). Over the next six months, I would endure a double mastectomy, breast reconstruction, 8 rounds of chemotherapy, 27 radiation treatments, hair loss, sickness, tiredness and fatigue. BUT, fast forward 2 years and here I sit cancer free!

When I was diagnosed with Triple Negative breast cancer, I remember saying “I just want to have get through this and move on. I don’t want cancer to define me.” That’s not possible. Having cancer changes you in ways you could have never imagined, for the good and the bad. It changes you and the people that love you. It changes how you view and value life. It clarifies what’s important and what’s not. For me, I am one of the lucky ones who survived. Others, like my friend and breast cancer mentor Anne, did not. For her and for all those to come, I now become an advocate.

I can honestly say that cancer gave me more than it took away. For me, it never had me mentally. I was able to stay positive and strong through the entire treatment process and into today but, not all are so lucky. I had a great support system and was able to fight with an army but, not all are so lucky. I had good insurance and while my cancer treatment is still being paid for, it didn’t bankrupt me financially, not all are so lucky. Cancer didn’t take my life and take a mom from their kids or a wife from their husband but, not all are so lucky. For all of those that are “not so lucky”, I now become an advocate.

“The Above + Beyond Cancer is a public charity with a mission to elevate the lives of those touched by cancer, to create a healthier world! Participants create a public following through participation in a variety of adventurous, physical endeavors –including recent trips to Mount Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp. Our transformational journeys are designed to create advocates driven to reduce the burden of cancer across the globe.”
I have been blessed to be chosen to participate in Above +Beyond Cancer’s 2014 adventure to climb Macchu Picchu in Peru, September 21-30, 2014! I still can’t believe it! As part of this journey, we are charged with fundraising for the organization and for our trip. Won’t you please consider contributing to my climb? Thank you for any contribution you can make…I climb on behalf of all cancer survivors, breast cancer and not…I climb to raise awareness…I climb to challenge myself and other survivors to beat cancer physically and mentally…I climb and I now become an advocate!
