I'd like to tell you about a mission trip that Celeste, Savanna, Hunter and I are going to take this Christmas season that will hopefully be a life changing experience for the people we come in contact with, as well as for ourselves.

Now, if I were you, I might be thinking, “The Sulcs are going on a mission trip? How are they going to find the time?” Sure, life is really busy with work, wrestling, basketball and raising five kids and maybe this isn’t the “best” time to go on a mission trip, but I’m not sure if there is ever a “good time” to go on a mission trip. And I could come up with a good list of reasons why we shouldn’t go, but I keep coming back to the one reason we should – God calls us to love His people.

Many of you who know me from different walks of life may be having some difficulty thinking of the words loving, caring, and sharing when you think of me. But I will convey to you what I tell the kids that I coach. There are many words for love in the Bible. There is one that is based not on warm fuzzy feelings, endearment and fondness – and that is Agape. Agape is love based on ACTION and SERVICE without regard to any feelings you have. It is actually more about discipline than it is about feeling. There. For those of you more comfortable thinking about me as that knuckle-dragging Marine, hopefully that makes you more comfortable.

So, the four of us are off to Haiti in December with members of our church and the Baltimore-based group Beyond All Boundries International. While we are there we will be giving out about 500 Christmas gifts to kids attending four different schools in Gonavies, a town about four hours south of Port Au Prince.

To give you a little bit of background on Gonaives’ recent struggles: In September 2004, Hurricane Jeanne caused major flooding and mudslides in the city. About 3,000 people were confirmed dead in Haïti, and the death toll in Gonaïves was believed to have topped 2,000. Every building in the city was damaged by the storm and 250,000 people were left homeless.

Four years later, the city was again devastated by another storm, Hurricane Hanna, which killed about 500 people, mostly in flooded sections of Gonaïves, where the destruction was described as “catastrophic.” At least 48,000 people from the Gonaïves areas were forced into shelters. Some people slept on the roofs of their houses to protect them from possible looters. The catastrophe left many homeless begging for food and clothes. Others left for the mountains hoping to wait out the next storms on the horizon.

As you can see, deciding to go to Haiti wasn’t a hard decision. When it comes down to it, Jesus laid out a pretty simple religion for us, didn’t He? Love God, love others, and love ourselves. No, deciding to go was easy. Paying for it however, is the real challenge.

Thankfully, there are lots of ways – both big and small - you can support our efforts in Haiti. The gifts we will be distributing will be packaged in small gift bags that will cost about $15-20 each. We will be carrying these gifts in our own suitcases, as there is no organizational infrastructure to ship goods to Gonavies. Each suitcase we check will cost between $50 and $150. So, you could sponsor a gift bag or a suitcase!

We are also seeking funds on behalf of Beyond All Boundaries to build its orphanage. Construction has started on a three phase project that when complete will house 30 children. The orphanage will consist of three orphan homes, a multi-purpose center, kitchen facilities, and children’s play centers. Financial assistance for this worthwhile capital project would be life altering for children who have lost their mothers and fathers.

Thank you for your consideration of financial support as we reach out to the people of Haiti. Even if you cannot give at this time, your prayers would be support enough. As much as God loves mission trips, the enemy does not. There will likely be a host of obstacles that will pop up and entangle themselves around our ankles as we prepare to love the children of Gonavies. Knowing that you are covering our family in prayer would mean a lot to our family.

Thank you for letting us share with you what will be one of the most meaningful experiences of our lives. Checks can be made out to our church, The Orchard.
