BENEFITING: Heart of Los Angeles Youth Inc
Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, and wood.
This summer, HOLA hopes to raise $20,000 to send four youth to Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina for a week of art, nature and expanded learning. For many of these students, it will be the first time they've left home. This will be an extraordinary opportunity to expand their world and hone their craft.
Last year, we were proud to send four recent graduates and long-time HOLA youth to Penland. All had exhibited strong interest in creative studies and had taken many HOLA visual arts classes from elementary through high school. Ana took a furniture design class, and Alexis and Isaac both took a photography class, experimenting with video and documentary photography. Yair took a class in field drawing that focused on nature as a subject and process.
All four students had a remarkable experiences that strengthened their artistic skills and interests, and gave them an opportunity to explore the world around them.
HOLA hopes that this fundraiser will be successful enough to also bring two Penland artists to HOLA for $4,000, and send one HOLA art instructor to Penland with our students for $3,500.
