Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the Oglala Lakota Sioux is considered a 3rd world country. Services that most communities enjoy are just not available. The nearest community swim center is more than 40 miles away and is not reachable through public transportation. Most families cannot afford the gas to get their kids there.
This summer has been particularly hot with temperatures reaching over 100 and into the 110's on a regular basis. Thanks to private donations Earth Tipi (www.earthtipi.org) was able to buy an above ground swimming pool so that local children could cool off during these hot days of summer. The usual cool nights and afternoon storms have not blessed us this year. So far we have hosted summer camp for 18 girls and had countless youth visit us during the days to swim. The pool also serves volunteers who work in the hot sun and need somewhere to cool off mid-day. Due to the high traffic, the filter that came with our pool has not been able to keep the algae at bay and we have had to temporarily close it.
Pool maintenance is expensive and we need your help! We were able to get Over $100 in chemicals donated by a local spa store. Which has helped clear up the water. We also have a group of volunteers here this week from the William Penn House (https://www.facebook.com/williampennhousedc) who have committed to paying $300 towards an appropriate sized pool filter to handle the high traffic. We need your help to pay for the remainder of the filter ($274) plus a pool cleaner which costs $200. Keeping our pool properly cleaned and maintained will mean a longer life for the pool and enjoyment by the children for years to come.
Please help us raise $574 as soon as possible so we can cool off in this hot summer sun!
