Make a Difference in a Child's Life.
Donate to the Summer Reading Kits Project.
Reading is the key to academic success and a summer break from school can mean a big set back for many children. Young students who don’t continue to read over the summer, especially those who are already not reading at a proficient level, are likely to lose crucial ground. One summer off from reading can mean a next school year of struggling academic performance.
Let’s not let this happen to our local children! Join us as we work to ensure that children go home for the summer with resources to promote summer reading.
United Way is working to send every child at Cesar Chavez and San Antonio Elementary Schools home with a Summer Reading Kit. These kits will include age-appropriate books from their recommended summer reading lists and other resources to increase summer reading for the entire family. Research shows that the key to stemming summer reading loss is getting books into the hands of children during their summer break. Help us make this happen!
How You Can Help.
Donate. For every $10 donation, you can send 1 student home with a Summer Reading Kit. For $200, you can provide kits for an entire classroom.
Volunteer. Volunteer opportunities are available to help sort and pass out the Summer Reading Kits. Dates and times will be available soon.
United Way Silicon Valley is working with schools in the Alum Rock Union School District to ensure early learning success and strengthen families because we know that children who are proficient in reading by 3rd grade are much more likely to successfully graduate from high school and be successful, and that helping families support their child’s development makes a stronger and healthier community for us all.
