BENEFITING: Summer Search
ORGANIZER: Summer Search
EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2015
Dear Family and Friends,
It is with great excitement that I write to you. On Monday, April 20, 2015, I will embark on my first marathon. I never before dreamed of running the Boston Marathon. As excited (and terrified) as I am to run, I'm equally excited to be part of the Summer Search Boston Marathon Team. I will join three other runners to train and raise money for Summer Search Boston: a non-profit organization that focuses on leadership development for low income high school students in the Boston area.
Summer Search Boston works with over 400 low-income high school students annually, providing them with three things: weekly mentoring from full-time staff, scholarships to participate in life changing summer experiences with programs like Outward Bound and Brown University, and personalized college advising during senior year. The results are incredible: 99% of Summer Search students graduate from high school, and 83% graduate from college! This college graduation rate compares to only 11% for their low-income peers nationally. The average income for a Summer Search student is $22,900 for a family of four, so when these students graduate from college, it literally changes the trajectory of their lives and their families' lives forever.
I've seen it personally. Having worked at Summer Search for six years, I was so fortunate to mentor incredible kids. They pushed themselves so far outside their comfort zones to make a difference in their lives and to be examples for younger siblings and others in their communities. They've inspired me to push myself to do something great and to set an example for my own children that dedication, hard work, opportunity, and support can lead to big successes – all while raising money for Summer Search so they can reach more deserving kids. It’s a win-win! Now, I’ve just got to remember that at mile 20.
