My father, an immigrant from Argentina, and my mother, an immigrant from Ecuador, first moved to the United States in their early 20’s. They would end up having three children, of which I am the youngest, and raised us in the small town of Watertown, Massachusetts.
School was difficult for my sisters and I, as English was our second language. Like so many other Summer Search students, I was the first in my family to attend and graduate from college. In 2009, I graduated from the Design and Human Factors program at Cornell University.
It was during my sophomore year, 2002, in high school when I was ask the all-important question of “What is it like to be in your shoes?” This marked the beginning of an on-going journey that has pushed me to my mental and physical limits and took me to places such as the ranging Green & Colorado Rivers and the snowcapped mountain of the Himalayas in India.
Over a decade later Summer Search is still delivering life changing opportunities. On Monday April 20, 2015 I will run the historic Boston Marathon in my native Boston, as 1 of 4 runners representing Summer Search. Why would I consider having to run 26.2 miles an opportunity? Because I wholeheartedly believe in the mission of Summer Search and have witnessed firsthand the impact it can deliver in a student’s life. I truly believe Summer Search is one our nation greatest tools in eliminated the education gap and achieving equality amongst our citizens.
