The Summit for Hope began from a group of big-hearted, high-energy Heart for Africa volunteers. They designed this creative and exciting way to raise funds for Project Canaan in Swaziland. It started with the idea of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa, in 2009, and has grown to include climbing many peaks, mountain-tops, and skyscrapers around the world. Imagine people reaching to some of the highest points on earth to bring HOPE (Hunger Orphans Poverty Education) to a country filled with orphans and vulnerable children...you can make a difference by hiking with us or donating to support the event or hike's fundraising goals.
Heart for Africa is developing a place of hope in Swaziland called Project Canaan. Project Canaan is a 2,500 acre large-scale land development project being designed by business people to come alongside Africans and bring expertise, resources and hearts together to find a holistic solution to a complex set of issues. It will provide training and employment, grow large amounts of food to stimulate the local economy and allow for export while supporting orphans and vulnerable children on the property and across the nation. There are two sides to this development project, the first is the farm side and the second is the children side.
WHO AM I:
My Name is Michael Skiles I am 29 years young, originally from Wisconsin and moved to Swaziland April 12th, 2013 as a long term volunteer on Project Canaan. I have been living/working on the farm and in the surrounding communities since then. My main focus at Project Canaan is Heavy equipment operation for road maintenance, clearing land for agriculture, and grading construction sites for all of the buildings that are going up such as the El Rofi Medical Center, Khutsala Artisan shops, Kibbuts, and Children's homes. In the past few months I have been training a local guy to operate our bulldozer and he is doing very well. Together we have started new sites for schools, and housing, including a road that will open up a whole new section of land on the farm. In my free time here I try to experience all the adventure Swaziland and South Africa has to offer, rock climbing, everything ocean, and definitely hiking! On Sundays after church service i take some of the guys to show them around their country and go hiking as many of them haven't been more than a half hour away from there home and it is a great time for fellowship. It has actually became part of my training for Kili because one thing I have learned is that Swazi People are FIT!
It will be a six day climb traversing 6 different ecosystems including grasslands, a rainforest, shrub, heather, alpine desert, and the arctic summit.
Please feel free to pass this email along to anyone you think might be interested in my Summit 4 HOPE.
Thank you for your generous support!
