Rally for Regina…Officially a SUCCESS!
June 30, 2016
Below is our original update on Regina. Currently she is working hard in rehab and making progress every day. She participates in intensive therapies daily including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech/language therapy. Regina no longer has a tracheostomy or a feeding tube and she is able to talk and eat solid foods. Regina is in good spirits and is so thankful for everyone's love and support!
On March 18, 2016, Regina Senkowsky, a 36 year old married mother of four small children (ages 2-8) suddenly suffered cardiac arrest while at work. Her amazing co-workers started CPR until the EMT's arrived and she was then rushed to Paoli Hospital. Regina received intensive treatments that weekend at Paoli Hospital but she developed seizures that required a higher level of care and on March 21, 2016, Regina was transferred to the neuro intensive care unit at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Doctors feared that Regina suffered severe brain trauma from the cardiac arrest and worked tirelessly to counteract any effects of this trauma.
After Regina's seizures were under control, the doctors assessed her brain functioning. The results were not hopeful and the doctors informed her family that, based on these tests, she would most likely be paralyzed and never regain full consciousness. Well, this was not acceptable to anyone and we all prayed for a miracle. We never gave up, her doctors and nurses never gave up...and neither did Regina.
Within a week of this devastating diagnosis (4 weeks in the hospital), Regina became more alert. She started opening her eyes more, moving her head and...moving her arms! Not only did Regina start to do these things on command but she also started smiling and tried to laugh at our bad jokes!
Regina is now fully off of ventilator support and is breathing on her own. To top it all off, Regina is now starting to move her feet on command and, despite having a tracheostomy, is attempting to talk! Regina is asking about her family and communicating her needs to the medical staff. The doctors and nurses are speechless.
There is no medical explanation for Regina's amazing recovery. It is truly the miracle that we all prayed for and for this we are truly grateful! We are also truly grateful for her medical team at HUP! Even when things were at their worst, they went above and beyond to care for Regina - always seeing her for the human person that she is and not just another "patient."
After over six weeks (3/18/16 - 5/3/16) in intensive care, Regina is now medically stable and is off to rehab where she will receive intensive therapies to regain her motor and verbal skills. As you can imagine, Regina being in the hospital for this amount of time has put a great strain on her family - both emotionally and financially. Regina's husband, James, has been by her side everyday and has taken a leave of absence from work to help care for her. As Regina continues to recover over these next several months, the day-to-day needs of her children and living expenses like childcare, food and monthly bills (including medical bills) will continue.
Because Regina, James, Kevin, Emily, Jason and Molly are so loved, so many family and friends are asking how they can help and are offering funds to assist with the family's costs. We are setting up this fundraising page in response to those requests. We want to thank everyone for all of your LOVE, SUPPORT and PRAYERS! They have definitely seen the Senkowskys through this difficult time. We are so grateful for any continued support you can provide them at this time.
Sincerely, The Senkowsky and Cardwell Families
