In Rwanda, genocide related crimes present a higher percentage. Pregnant and nursing women are also imprisoned and share life with other prisoners in densely populated prisons with poor hygienic and nutritional conditions. Among these women, some are infected by HIV/AIDS and have adhered to Anti Retro Viral drugs. Pregnant and nursing inmates infected by HIV/AIDS who adhered to Anti Retro Viral drugs are estimated at 16.5% of all female inmates and do not receive any food supplement to keep strong and live longer and see their children grow. 91% of these women do not have life skills that will enable them to reintegrate in the society after their release. This situation may jeopardize their lives and those of their children if any appropriate measures are taken. The fundraiser will help the provision of milk cows to prisons which will help improve their nutritional conditions. Hygienic problems will also be addressed by distributing sanitary materials. Trough sensitization on HIV/AIDS, detained women will acquire knowledge on HIV/AIDS and participate in the prevention of Mother to child transmission of HIV. Prison personnel will also be trained on detained women’s rights and HIV/AIDS to increase their ownership of the action. 78 detained pregnant and nursing women will be trained on chicken rearing and mushroom growing to empower them with skills which will enable their reintegration in the society after their release. Our fundraiser « Support against AIDS for Imprisoned Women» is the first of its kind in Rwanda. It has a multiplier effect since it will benefit both the mothers and their children. The distribution of milk cows will be a sustainable way of improving nutritional conditions of these women and their children. Cows will multiply over the years as opposed to other food stuffs which are only consumed and finished. The empowerment of detained women through vocational training for their preparation to social reintegration after release is an innovation and this will also help their children who are now victims of the situation.
