Support Jocelyn's Marathon!
Organized by: Jocelyn R
EVENT DATE Oct 09, 2016
In May 2016, Mockumentary filmmaker set out to Portland State University and attempted to raise support for the faux organization, “American Friends of Hamas”. The "fundraiser" on film explained that Hamas was no longer the student’s “father’s terrorist organization” and had that they had “rebranded” themselves because they only shot rockets at “soft-targets, like schools and hospitals”. What started out as a humorous attempt, suddenly took a turn for the worst, when students not only willingly voiced support for the organization, they pledged funds! Unfortunately, the Pacific Northwest is a growing hot-bed of anti-Israel sentiment and anti-Semitism. As such, I felt a need and duty to respond to this. In order to counter these sentiments I am running in the Portland Marathon fully decked out in Israel flag paraphernalia and will spend the weekend speaking to locals and marathon visitors about Israel. The Portland Marathon is one of the largest marathon’s in the country. It is a qualifying marathon for the Boston Marathon, considered one of the country’s premier races by Runners World Magazine, and welcomes over 10,000 participants and 4,500 volunteers. Of course, I anticipate some interesting conversations. The funds I raise here will be distributed to Jewish community building efforts and Israel education programs on various campuses that demonstrate additional need for support.
