BENEFITING: ACTION FOR BOSTON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
- This year Dorchester Academy will be implementing our first ever "Project Month." Project Month is a one month course designed by teams of teachers using a project based learning model. Your donations will directly fund a total of 7 field trips as well as a daily (healthy) breakfast, lunch & snack. We are hoping to have an end of the year BBQ or potluck to celebrate our Project Month accomplishments as well.
- Anyone who is able to provide their email or mailing address will receive a mid-project update and an end of project newsletter with thank you letters from students and teachers! You will also be invited to our end of year celebration. There are 7-10 students currently enrolled in the project and we hope a successful year will lead to more course offerings like this one:)
- More info on the course....I (Joe Cain) teach math and have partnered with our anatomy teacher and a student support clinician to offer Healthy Mind, Body & Wallet. Our goal is to teach students about the human body & mind as well as "real world/everyday" math! This course will start each day with a morning walk/yoga/mindfulness exercise followed by a healthy breakfast! We will then learn about the human body systems by creating our own 2 (or maybe even 3) dimensional, life size human body where we will identify & explain each body system. Instead of heading to the cafeteria that currently serves pre-packaged meals we have partnered with a local non-profit to provide healthy smoothies, oatmeal, salads, sandwiches and prepared meals for less than $6 (breakfast, lunch & snack!!!! ) After we eat lunch we will have another exercise break (20-30 min walk/run) and return to the classroom to learn about math. Our first week we will apply our knowledge of fractions/decimals/percentages to solve real world multi-step problems as we learn how to read food labels, plan our meals and keep track of what nutrients we put in our bodies! The mathematics will continue in week 2 as we learn how to eat healthy on a budget and develop a plan for savings. Weeks 3-4 offer some choice to students with projects on buying vs. leasing cars, purchasing vs. renting a home and how to pay for college. We currently have 7 field trips planned. Our first trip will be a corner store vs. grocery store tour/scavenger hunt on finding healthy food and comparing costs. We have a total of four trips (one each week) to the Boston University Fitness Center where will take one group fitness class! We also have 2 field trips planned to South Boston Yoga Studio where an expert in working with young people who have experience trauma will teach us how to practice yoga. Students will complete the course when they have finished their final products which include a 2-D human body systems poster, a nutrition/reflection journal and a "basic" budget.
