Why support Philadelphia Young Playwrights (PYP)?
If you believe that self-agency (i.e., ability to believe in your capacity to form your own opinions, take initiatives, and carry out plans) is not only key to child’s learning but also essential as a life skill, you should support PYP.
I started my education in a conservative school in Thailand where learning revolved around memorization with very little discussion. Having gone through both public and private schools in Thailand, Singapore, and the US, I believe that education should help student develop sense of self-agency whereby students are, instead of being passive recipients, actively involved in decisions about the learning. Education should help shape them to be curious, reflective, confident, creative, and practical.
PYP creates and executes programs together with schools to achieve this – through playwriting. Teaching artists and teachers work together to integrate standard curriculum with interactive lesson plans and activities targeting specific learning outcomes such as improvement in critical thinking and communication. The program is currently adopted not only in Theatre classes but also in English, History, and Social Studies. The impact of PYP program is tremendous. Schools with PYP programs show improved reading proficiency level while students demonstrate various level of achievements - ranging from being able to finish their first essays ever to developing self-confidence in their ability to write with fluency or even finding their passion in writing!
I hope to raise $500 to sponsor these incredible programs. There is no gift that is too small :) Let’s support Philadelphia Young Playwrights together!
