Support Shay's Journey
Organized by: Kristin Smith
Shay Smith was in a horrible car accident on Sept 7th. He had worked to save money to buy his first car just 2 days before the accident. On the morning of Sept 7th, Shay passed his driving test, got his license, and paid to register his car. He was so excited to start driving on his own in his "new" car! He even offered to pick up his younger siblings from school that afternoon. Later that same day he was leaving a meeting for seniors at Legend High School and stopped at a red light just a block from school. A truck barreled into the back of Shay's car traveling around 55mph, crushing Shay's car and sending it through the intersection into the oncoming traffic lanes where it hit another car. He was unconscious for a while and sustained a broken elbow, 2 brain bleeds, and a traumatic brain injury. The police and paramedics say his seatbelt saved his life. They said he was doing all the "right things." Shay was in the ICU for a few days and is now in a regular room at the hospital. From here Shay will go to an Acute Rehab facility for further care for his brain injury. His recovery will take time, hard work, and a lot of prayer. Shay is in some top classes at high school, such as AP Calculus and Physics. Last week he said he wanted to study worm holes to see if people can travel through them to distant galaxies and learn more about the universe. He loves to read and create and build things. Shay is the 2nd of 4 kids. He played soccer until his senior year because he wanted to focus on his academics to prepare for college next year. Eventually Shay will come back home and work to settle into life again. In the meantime we are hoping to raise some money for Shay to help him get a new car (maybe a tank so he can be extra safe on the roads ;) , and to help offset his medical expenses. Shay has received wonderful care all along the way, and his family is amazed to see his community come around him in deeply loving ways! Thank you for supporting Shay in his journey back to wholeness! This is priceless!
