BENEFITING: OVERSEAS VOLUNTEER FOR A BETTER INDIA INC
In our last trip to India, we visited Sri Sri Balika Vidya Mandir School at Parola Village in Udaipur. This is a remote tribal location where alcoholism and domestic violence is very prevalent. The tribal have to battle poverty and drought and female literacy comes as a last priority and stands at pathetic 21.78%. In July 2014, to break the vicious cycle of poverty, inequality and domestic violence in the area, Art of Living Foundation decided to intervene and opened the first girls-only school in the area. Within a short span of two years this program became a big success and the school has registered 114 girls. The school offers classes from LKG to fifth class and has three classrooms with a small playground. Apart from the primary aim of educating these girls the school also provides them healthy food to overcome malnutrition. Without the school, most of these girls would be goat herders to supplement the paltry household income. The area is surrounded by mountains and has rough terrain. Due to the lack of transportation and remote location the girls’ parents are hesitant to send their kids to school. To gain their confidence, the school currently hires an auto service that picks and drop off these girls to their homes in a 10 km radius. The auto has to make multiple rounds due to the limited capacity. The school now wants to have its own bus to bring the kids in one go. Also it can go for longer distances to cover more villages. This is the highest priority for the team and is needed soon. In the future the plan is to Build more classrooms and infrastructure for the school Continuous pay for the teachers/ more teacher hires as the student population increases Sri Sri Vidya Mandir is the only ray of hope for hundreds of these girls who are the first generations ever in their families to receive formal education. The school has given girls of this area to have a vision for having a successful life and being able to become independent. Your contribution will make a significant difference to their lives. Please support generously and donate.
