BENEFITING: Daraja Education Fund
EVENT DATE: May 15, 2016
Last year I ran Bay to Breakers for Abdia, my “Kenyan daughter” and many of you supported my race. That support directly covers the cost of her education. On Sunday, May 15th, Abdia and all 113 of her fellow students will run in the Race for Daraja. They will run through neighboring villages to raise awareness and funds for girls’ education, and I am proud to be Abdia’s fundraising partner. This is the one time during the year that she can fundraise for her education. My life’s purpose is to change the world by helping other women and girls achieve their potential. My work with the Daraja Academy of Kenya, is allowing me to live that purpose in a remarkable way, and Abdia is my proof.
The Daraja Academy of Kenya is a free secondary boarding school for exceptional girls who have no other way to continue their education. These are exceptionally bright girls with tremendous potential, who without Daraja would most likely be married off at thirteen years old, be exposed to the risk of HIV/AIDS, early pregnancy and childbirth, and many other often life-threatening and horrific circumstances. This was Abdia’s certain path until the we met in Kenya a little over 2 years ago. Today she is thriving in her third year of high school. She is excelling academically, and has emerged as a true leader on campus.
The most exciting thing, is that for every girl that gets the chance to go to school, the knock-on effect is huge. When a girl gets an education, their lives and the lives of their families, villages, countries and the world improve dramatically. There is no better ROI.
Thank you for taking a minute to read this, and please consider investing in girls by supporting Abdia’s race! Together, we will change the world.
