Support the Girls is an amazing organization that collects and distributes bras and feminine hygene products to homeless women. In Baton Rouge we are starting up in the midst of what has been referred to as "The Great Flood", "A 500 Year Flood", and "A 1,000 Year Flood". I'm not up on the statistics, but it's bad y'all.
So right now we are not only focused on 'traditional' homelessness, if there is such a thing, but also on helping the many women who have recently had to flee their homes with their families and, if they were lucky, the few bags they could carry.
A week on, many women are fully realizing what all they have lost. As Louisianians, we've helped our brothers and sisters go through this before. We knew our lives would never be the same. We knew about gutting our houses quickly before the water crept up the sheetrock. We knew about the FEMA trailers, the MRE's, the shelter cots. We knew how valuable those lil fishin' boats were. I even saw some of the Cajun Navy come up in shrimp boats. We were pretty dang impressive about taking care of our pets, too. We knew to get all the adoptable animals out of the area ASAP to make sure we had room for the fur-babies who needed to be close by when their loved ones came looking. But this time, it was our house, our kids, our photo albums, our grandparents.
All to say, BRAS and TAMPONS and PANTY LINERS and OVERNIGHTS WITH WINGS were not at the top of anyone's list to throw in that one bag!!!
A lot of women just realized they only have one bra, one pair of shoes... Some of these women can't afford new bras. Some will keep wearing that same one every day (not healthy btw) because they can't afford new bras AND new kids clothes, and shoes, and fixing the house, and a car... So we are going to try to help them all.
Personally, I am in a position to organize and to do. Not so much with the paying. So I am asking for those of you who would like to help, but don't have time or bras to give, to give a little financially. It doesn't need to be much. We only need about $110 to cover the cost of a PO Box for a year and six 30 gallon storage containers to start running donation drives locally!
Please help us get moving ASAP. People just want to change bras y'all!
