BENEFITING: Postsecondary National Policy Institute
In the summer of 2016, the Postsecondary National Policy Institute (PNPI), a nonprofit that provides professional development to higher education policymakers, launched its first Summer Scholar Program and brought two scholars to Washington – Glen Casey and Irene Cruz.
Glen Casey, a Pell recipient and undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania, and Irene Cruz, a first generation college student and graduate student at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, brought their experiences, perspectives and passion for education to our work.
While in Washington they engaged in research, prepared reports, attended policy events, compiled resources for congressional staff and met and networked with policy professionals. We’re proud that upon completion of their summer experience, they expressed interest in working in public policy as a long-term career goal.
We’re proud because we believe it is important that the people creating national programs designed to support students pursuing a college degree reflect the actual experiences of today’s college students, individuals who are increasingly financially strapped, non-white and often balancing the demands of work, parenting and school.
In a city where the cost of living can be over $2,000 a month, PNPI’s Summer Scholar Program provides students with demonstrated financial need an opportunity to live and work in the nation’s capital by offering a fully-funded intern experience. Scholars are provided with accommodations and transportation, and are paid for the work that they do.
Our goal is to bring to Washington a diverse group of students who could not otherwise afford to intern here in hopes that we can inspire them to join the ranks of federal postsecondary policymakers.
We are excited at the possibility of further helping to build the bench of future policymakers with your help. Your contribution will help us build upon and expand our current program’s reach!
