BENEFITING: Akilah Institute for Women
EVENT DATE: Jun 17, 2016
The Akilah Institute was co-founded by my good friend Dave and his wife Elizabeth. Akilah is the only women's college in Rwanda.
The college opened in 2010 and they now have nearly 400 students. They are doubling their student population in 2017 and opening a network of campuses around East Africa.
Hearing first hand about this remarkable story and witnessing all the amazing hard work these guys do has inspired me to also do something for Akilah, which is why I signed up for this challenge.
I will be taking part in a 100 km race across desert, rock, dunes in the Steppes on the edge of Siberia.
The work they do has transformed the lives of hundreds of women in Rwanda. 88% of graduates launch their careers upon graduation and earn 13 x the median income in Rwanda.
Akilah offers majors in Information Systems, Entrepreneurship, and Hospitality Management. Students take exciting courses in leadership, public speaking, coding, web development, accounting, management, and accounting. 75% of students are the first in their family to go to college. 47% of students have lost one or more parent. The Akilah Scholarship Fund supports 80% of the cost of tuition and makes it possible for young women to experience a life-changing educational experience.
Thank you for your support.
