The California Innocence Project is a law school clinical program dedicated to freeing the wrongfully convicted. To date, 282 people in the United States have been exonerated by DNA testing, including 17 who served time on death row. These people served an average of 13 years in prison before exoneration and release.

I joined the Project because I passionately believe that no one should go to prison for a crime they did not commit. Over the past year, the CIP has had four exonerations: Reggie Cole (exonerated after 14 years of wrongful incarceration); Raphael Madrigal (exonerated after 8 years of wrongful incarceration); William Richards (exonerated after 12 years of wrongful incarceration), and; Daniel Larsen (exonerated after 12 years of wrongful incarceration).

Thousands of hours of work went into these cases as my fellow students trekked all over the state of California tracking down witnesses and evidence. The evidentiary hearings were long and expensive, but ultimately successful in reversing these horrendous wrongful convictions.

Winning these cases and investigating the thousands of cases that come through our office costs money. Our expenses are simple things such as photocopying, court filing fees, copies of crime scene photos and reports, gas money, expert witness costs, but the expenses pile up fast when you investigate and litigate as many cases as we do.

Your donations help:

Pay for DNA testing;
Increase legal services;
Support reform initiatives to address the causes of wrongful convictions;
Evaluate the overwhelming number of requests that they receive

In this down economy, charities such as ours have suffered and we need an infusion of donations in order to continue the high level of service to our clients that we currently provide. This year our budget is $50,000 short of covering our projected expenses.

If you, or anyone you know, can make a donation to CIP, I would be incredibly grateful. Pass the word on to your friends and family and send a link to our website and to our donation page If you want to sponsor me, please enter my name, Marianne Laleuf, in the student name slot.

On behalf of the wrongfully incarcerated fighting for freedom, thanks for any help you can give us!
