THE STORY:

Before Aiden turned one we noticed he would grab his head and start screaming in pain. We would comfort him, which made him calm down. It continued to happen so we took him to his doctor and we were told that there was nothing wrong. This went on for sometime and every time we took him back they would send us home wondering what was wrong with our little boy. They ended up telling us that we are worrying to much and he will out grow it. Once we PCS'd (moved) to Hawaii it was still happening and he was turning four, so once again we took him to his new doctor with no luck. I decided to go back and this time I was not leaving without being referred to a specialist. They sent him to get a MRI which show the Chiari Malformation with syringomyelia. The Chiari malformation is an abnormality in the lower part of the brain called the cerebellum. The syringomyelia part is where the spine has fluid build-up inside of the spinal cord. If the fluid continues to go into the spinal cord it can cause a lot of damage to the spinal cord and will make the pain get worse. We were destroyed hearing that something was wrong but happy to know that it wasn't cancerous. The neurosurgeon said he wanted to monitor the condition for six months and see if anything changed so we waited once more and when the six months were up we went back to find the only change was Aiden's pain has moved from only being in his head to now being in his extremities as well. He wakes up at night crying that his legs and one arm hurts. To correct this issue he will need to undergo a procedure known as a posterior fossa decompression, which is where the surgeon makes more room in the back of the head by removing small pieces of the skull bones. This reduces compression of the brain stem and allows the tonsils to move back into their natural position
We are asking if you could just donate a dollar or two and share our story with your friends to help bring awareness about Chiari malformation and syringomyelia. The money raised would go a long way in trying to meet our goal of bringing our extended family to the hospital to help support us in Aiden's recovery and so they will be able to take care of our three month old when Aiden needs us by his side at the hospital. It is hard to ask for other people to give money but with my wife having to leave her job to be with our son we are down to one income, which is going to make it hard to help our extended family be there for us. We would like to thank you for anything you can do and hopefully we will be able to repay you for your help and support one day.
