BENEFITING: BALLONA ECOSYSTEM EDUCATION PROJECT
Coastal Commission Executive Director Charles Lester was fired after a public hearing on February 10, 2016 in Morro Bay, CA. An estimated 700-1000 people made the trek in support of Charles Lester. Despite Charles Lester receiving the support from 150 members of the Coastal Commission Staff, 35 former Coastal Commissioners, 17 members of the legislature, including Speaker Toni Atkins and 20,000 members of the public, the Coastal Commission voted to dismiss him on a 7-5 vote. Only two public comments advocated for the dismissal of Charles Lester.
However, because of a convenient loophole in the law, Coastal Commissioners did not have to report or disclose communications that were received on their personal computers. The public was left completely in the dark on the reasons and evidence that a highly qualified, well-liked and efficient executive director was fired.
Grassroots Coalition filed a lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court on February 24, 2016 to compel the release of the personnel file and ex parte communications from Coastal Commissioners. The costs of litigation, particularly litigation involving 19 defendants (Coastal Commission, Charles Lester +Commissioners) is expensive. Grassroots Coalition needs to raise funds to cover costs of the lawsuit and continue its public integrity work. Please help Grassroots Coalition continue its mission. Both Grassroots Coalition and Ballona Ecosystem Education Project are 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. Your donation is completely tax-deductible.
