I joined this effort to raise funds for a promising line of research in developing a heroin vaccine which is going on Scripps Howard. The research has worked well in animal trials, but human trials are stalled because donors are not interested. Pharmaceutical companies are not interested because vaccines are not profitable for them. Private donors and celebrity champions for the cause are difficult to find because heroin addicts are pariahs in our society and finding treatment or cure for this disease is not the cause of the moment.
This fundraiser was started by Caron Block. Please read what she wrote below before you donate so you will understand what your money is going toward:
- The heroin vaccine developed by Drs. Janda and Koob not only has the potential to eliminate relapse, but can also prevent heroin overdoses from occurring because it blocks heroin from entering the brain in the first place. This vaccine is very different from Naloxone which reverses overdoses after they have occurred. The vaccine has global implications which may decrease IV heroin use and reduce the rates of HIV and other blood born infections worldwide. The vaccine has surpassed expectations in pre-clinical trials. However, it is likely that in order to get to human trials, patents need to granted. The U.S. patent application has been filed as a result of this fundraising. All money goes directly to Scripps which is a 501c3. Both Crowdrise and the payment processor take a small fee. I take no money or compensation. Any donation is strictly a donation and is not to be construed as anything else including but not limited to: ownership rights, option rights, licensing rights. There is no guarantee that patents will be granted or that clinical trials will begin even if this money is raised and all appropriate patents are applied for and granted. By donating, donor acknowledges that they understand and agree to these statements. Having said all that, we should give it our best shot! Thanks for donating!
