HELP US RAISE $5000 FOR THIS CAMP
June 09, 2016
BENEFITING: American Friends Service Committee
The Healing and Transformative Justice Program of the American Friends Service Committee ("AFSC") is raising $5,000 in individual donations to support our work with dedicated young people in the New York Metropolitan Area. Please give when and as you can.
Funds raised will support the ongoing work of AFSC's Liberation Summer Young People's Advocacy Training Camp, piloted in the summer of 2014 and now in its third year.
Young leaders, having been affected by the criminal or immigration legal systems, or concerned about the injustices of these systems, look to AFSC each summer to help them become Agents of Change.
Liberation Summer builds leadership skills and offers social justice advocacy training to youth looking to make a difference in their own communities.
Join us by supporting this effort as it continues and grows.
In 2014 the AFSC Healing and Transformative Justice Program in New York piloted an intensive Liberation Advocacy Camp, designed to bring together young people and train them in organizing and advocacy skills as well as to educate them about the criminal and immigration systems--institutions that together have compounded the ongoing problems of mass incarceration in the US. The camp was extremely successful, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants.
In 2015, AFSC continued our commitment to engaging youth in the work towards enduring peace. It partnered with Echoes of Incarceration to bring together fifteen young “Agents of Change” to use photography and film to advocate for healing in the areas of immigration and criminal justice.
In 2016 the young people will learn how to do grassroots organizing and use the political arena for change. In addition to developing a better understanding of civics, they will be trained in community empowerment, lobbying and public speaking.
