THE STORY:

As most of you know I was in Guatemala in February. During part of that trip Bill and I joined a group visiting the work of Mercado Global. Mercado Global is doing really amazing work to empower rural indigenous Mayan women. So often when I think about donating to a non-profit I wonder how the money will be used and if the organization is really effective. Seeing the work that Mercado Global is doing first hand was a pleasure. There is so much thoughtfulness and integrity in their work with the Guatemalan people. This is the way capitalism should always be, ethical, sustainable, and socially responsible. . Their ancient arts of weaving, sewing and embroidery are fabulous. The clothing they wear everyday are spectacular examples of their appreciation and creation of color, texture and design. Mercado Global is working with the Mayan women in many small villages and creating sewing and weaving coops. They have a design team which is creating products that appeal to the high end buyers in the developed world. This enables the local women to reach out of the local small markets in Guatemala and sell their beautifully handmade wares to international companies like J Crew, Anthropologie and more. Mercado Global does more than help women reach larger markets, they help them buy larger sewing machines and looms, they provide workshops in financial literacy and personal health. The goal is for the women to become independent by offering them all of the tools to get there.
