Join us on May 1 at the Jenny's Light 10k/5k charity run to raise money for families in Santa Clara County
March 04, 2016
BENEFITING: SUPPORTING MAMAS
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
Becoming a new parent can be an exciting time, but during pregnancy or the first few weeks or months after the baby is born, one in seven moms and one in 10 dads will experience some form of pregnancy or postpartum-related mood disorder, such as postpartum depression or anxiety. That's an estimated 950,000 moms a year in the US - that's 745,000 more than the number of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
The effects of pregnancy and postpartum related mood disorders can be serious and devastating, causing the whole family to suffer. Moms who are struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety may feel a mix of sadness, anger, guilt, shame, fear, and loneliness. They may have a difficult time bonding with their baby. They may be plagued with obsessive thoughts of harm coming to their baby. In the very worst cases, moms may begin to believe their family is better off without them. But pregnancy and postpartum-related mood disorders are treatable. And in some cases, they may even be preventable. Having the awareness and support in place is key.
Supporting Mamas is a 501c3 non profit dedicated to connecting moms, partners and families in Santa Clara County (San Francisco Bay area) with the resources they need to help lessen the burden, so they no longer feel alone or afraid.
On May 1 2016, to coincide with Maternal Mental Health Month, Supporting Mamas will be taking part in the Jenny's Light 5k/10k charity run in Vasona Park in Los Gatos, CA. We aim to raise awareness of this important cause and to raise funds to help moms find the help they need to recover and take care of themselves and their families. And we need your support. Help us shine a light on pregnancy and postpartum-related mood disorders to increase overall awareness and reduce the stigma so that parents will feel heard, acknowledged and supported.
Please consider donating today to improve the lives of families in Santa Clara County.
