BENEFITING: KUNSI KEYA TAMAKOCE
Kunsi Keya Tamakoce, Grandmother Turtle, is a non-profit 501c3 organization in northern Vermont. We are dedicated to sharing the traditional teachings and sacred ceremonies of the Lakota people with women, children, and men, in order to support the health and well-being of the earth and all who live here.
Over the last 27 years we've touched and transformed the lives of thousands of people from diverse communities - different genders and sexual orientations; different age groups, and ethnicities.
The vision for the 101 acres of rural mountain, woodland and field where Kunsi Keya is located, is to provide a permanent home for Lakota ceremonies. Through our gatherings and programs participants can reconnect with nature and develop awareness of and respect for the animals and natural worlds. Kunsi Keya is a place for healing by working the land through sustainable practices. The land is intended to be a model of environmentally sound land use practices, including sustainable farming and forestry, medicinal healing gardens, trails, and habitat improvement.
Our Challenge is to develop and maintain a clean, renewable, sustainable energy system that complements our respect for the environment and our concern for future generations. To do this we have made initial investments in a solar energy panels, batteries, and a new generator to provide additional energy during peak energy demands.
However, our current energy infrastructure is overextended and we experience power failures when permanent residents at our site provide emergency shelter to those in need, sometimes for months at a time. During peak energy times, when as many a hundred of us gather together, the system is further stretched beyond capacity.
To Meet our Challenge we need to Increase the robustness and capacity of our solar system. This will perserve the integrety of our current energy infrasturcture, and allows for reduced generator use that extends the life of the generator, reduces costly fuel expenditures, reduces carbon emissions, and helps Kunsi Keya be a resource for the community and to create an ecological and financially sustainable system.
What is needed:
Solar System Battery Upgrade
A new set of 16 batteries can accommodate greater solar power input from additional panels without requiring a larger capacity inverter.
Additional Solar Panels
Twelve new solar panels, of improved technology are needed to expand the existing system. The new solar panels will operate in addition to the existing older panels.
Whatever your green gift, your contribution will go a long way to keep us off-grid, stay green and to continue the work of Grandmother Turtle by providing a safe place to heal the mind, body and spiritu. For more information go to http:www.kuniskeya.org
