Support People Living with Diabetes
Organized by: Akiko Otani
Event Name: Thanksgiving Challenge
The money raised from this fundraiser will be used to develop a free mobile learning app for people living with diabetes and members of their support network (family members, friends) to learn how to manage their symptoms effectively.
Over the past few years, I visited various countries aroung the world and I inevitably met many people who shared their personal experiences dealing with diabetes. Some of them lived with diabetes themselves and wasn't sure what to do about it. Others told me about having at least one immediate family member living with diabetes and wanting to support them but not knowing how.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, 382 million people around the world were affected by diabetes in 2013 with 80% living in low- and middle-income countries. By 2035, it is estimated that figure will increase to 592 million people, with the greatest increase occurring in Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia regions. Increasing access to simple, basic education will reduce the number of people developing diabetes, improve the quality of life of those living with the disease, and strengthen their support network. Considering that there are more than a billion people around the world using Smartphones and nearly 70% of them used apps, providing a mobile learning app will provide access to the fundamental resources needed to educate, prevent, and support people affected by diabetes. This is a real world, practical solution to slow the global diabetes epidemic and to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes.
