2015-2016 Support Richard At The Miller School of Albemarle!
Organized by: Lorie Strother
My name is Richard Hoge, Jr. and I’m 15 years old. This upcoming year will be my second at the Miller School of Albemarle (MSA) in Virginia. I will be entering the 10th grade and will again be a 5-day boarding student. As I pretty much expected, my experience at MSA was amazing last school year. I had some challenging classes but I was able to pass all of them. I completed the year with a 'B' average overall. Also, for the first time I was able to be a part of a sports team. The sport I chose was mountain biking.
Thank you to all of you for donating last school year. Your support helped to make my attendance at MSA happen. I want to continue to learn in a supportive high school environment. I believe this will lead me to success in the future. With your help this school year, the monies raised in this fundraiser will help my family afford the cost of my tuition, room/board, books, fees, and supplies. I am excited about going back to school in August and seeing my friends and teachers in the Miller School of Albemarle community!
My Learning Differences\Disorder:
I have mild learning differences in reading and writing and mild to moderate learning differences in math. I also have ADHD disorder inattentive type. Learning hasn't ever been easy for me but now that I know that I have these issues I am more understanding of myself and the ways that I learn.
I enjoy bicycling, muscle cars, and my betta fish.
I live with my mom and dad and I'm the 4th of 5 children. I am the only boy. Yikes!
Recent School Successes, Experiences, and Activities:
_In my 9th grade Biology class I continued studying ecology, plant life, animals, cells, parts of a microscope and much more! I also wrote a 10-page paper on the Ice Age. I took a trip with my classmates to the Botanical Garden in Richmond, Virginia. My favorite part of the visit was seeing the bright colors of the exotic plants.
_In 9th grade English class I studied Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (I also studied this in 8th grade). During this study, I traveled with classmates to the Blackfriars Theatre in Staunton, Virginia to watch the Shakespeare play, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. I also read the first book of the Bible, Genesis.
_In 9th grade Design/Build I, I made wooden plates, bowls, and baseball bats on a lathe. A lathe is a machine that rotates the wood so that you can cut it into a shape. I also used SketchUp software to design 3D projects.
_In 9th grade Ancient Medieval History I wrote an 8-page paper on the fall of the Roman Empire. I also learned about Christianity, Sparta, Sumerians, and so many other things that I can't recall right now.
_ I wrote two articles for the MSA school newspaper ‘Miller Times’. One was about student accessibility to technology within the school and the other was about the Endurance team.
_Last fall, during Signature Weekend, two of my endurance teammates and I voluntarily raked leaves off of the entire MSA 15-mile mountain bike trail. We rewarded ourselves with Chinese food afterwards.
_I canoed down the James River with the MSA Outdoor Club. I lost my shoes when my canoe capsized but I had fun.
_I became friends with students from all over the world!
_I joined the MSA Junior Varsity (JV) Endurance Team. In 2015, I participated in five races during the season throughout Virginia in Charlottesville (MSA), Richmond (Forest Hill Park), Harrisonburg (Hillendale Park), Orange (Woodberry Forest School), and St. George (Blue Ridge School). My final ranking for the 2015 JV Virginia High School Mountain Biking Series is #23 of 65. My performance this season was much better than when I began. At the recent athletic awards ceremony, I received a 'Most Improved' medal.
Recent Books Read:
Romeo and Juliet, Epic of Gilgamesh, Genesis, Lone Survivor, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, and Julius Ceasar.
I will continue to work hard to complete high school at The Miller School of Albemarle. Thank all of you for your donations and support!
