THE STORY:

The Southern Anti-Racism Network (SARN) began the "Education, Not Incarceration!" campaign in Durham, North Carolina in 2000. The Durham community came together to determine ways to end the impact of poverty and racial disparity in academic achievement and the use of discipline.

Parents, educators and community leaders were surveyed and parental involvement was identified as the number one factor in student achievement and positive student behavior. SARN reached out to public housing communities to understand what obstacles parents and students were facing. In partnership with the Durham Literacy Center, SARN launched Strong Parental Involvement in Community Education (SPICE).

Please view the 5-minute video on this page to see how families in one of the first low-income communities came together to develop SPICE and work to end the achievement gap and the digital divide.

SARN initiated "Building a Village" in Columbus GA in 2011 to engage the community (businesses, churches, community groups, students and parents) in a collaborative strategy to build the village it takes to advance education equity. An intergenerational organizing committee of students and parents is the core component of the new "Building a Village" project. A collaborative effort between the Columbus community and the Muscogee County School District is developing. The school-to-prison pipeline is a community concern.

Please give $10, $25, $50, $100 to support community organizing efforts in Columbus GA. Your donation will help provide training for low-income parents and students to do what they can do for themselves. Access to technology in their homes would go a long way in closing the academic achievement gap and encouraging positive behavior to stay in school.

The equivalent of 50 people giving $100 each will reach our goal of $5,000. SARN is committed for the long haul.

Please donate today. Thanks in advance for your support.
