BENEFITING: Art of Living Foundation
I want to share with you the story of a young teenage girl called Smrithi from Meghalaya, one of several small states in eastern India. Her widowed mother, who works on a farm in Meghalaya, is unable to support her five children all by herself, so Smrithi and her younger sister get free education at a school in Bangalore, nearly 1900 miles away from Meghalaya.
I had the privilege of interviewing Smrithi earlier this year when I visited her school in Bangalore. This remarkable young girl, who was then 15 years old, might otherwise have been working somewhere. Instead, she now has dreams of studying science and then going back to Meghalaya to make changes there! Watch Smrithi as she talks about the circumstances of her family, her dreams of going back to her village, and the gratitude with which she talks about her school.
Smrithi goes to the Art of Living School in Udayapura, near Bangalore, India. Children here get free education and also learn important life skills such as yoga, breathing techniques, and meditation. What I saw in their faces was innocence, joy, resilience, eagerness to learn, hopes, and dreams, despite difficult family circumstances. So many of these children’s lives have been transformed by the holistic education provided by these schools, and they take that energy with them to transform their communities!
There are many children like Smrithi from Meghalaya and other eastern states of India who are waiting for a break like this so that they can avoid the trap of child labor and prostitution. As this article points out, Meghalaya has many woes, including social and economic problems. I invite you to help transform these communities by giving from your heart. A donation of $365 will go towards supporting a child for one year! However, ANY amount you donate will go a long way. Your money will used to increase the capacity of existing schools and to build new schools so that more children like Smrithi can be supported with free holistic education. Most importantly, they will bring more smiles to these children’s faces and help them be successful!
I am doing this as a volunteer for Care for Children, a project of the Art of Living Foundation, which provides funds for the Art of Living Schools. For more details, go to www.careforchildren.org. Please spread the word, and feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you're inspired to volunteer.
May you have a wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!
