Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is a San Diego-founded 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on providing financial grants to active duty military and veterans in times of crisis and helping each family, through one-on-one counseling to develop a path to financial self-sufficiency. STEP assists the lower six pay grades (E1-E6), active duty, transitioning and veterans through their first 18 months following discharge.
America’s young fighting force volunteer from throughout the United States and are paid a very modest wage for their service to our country. In relation to the high cost-of-living of Southern California, many of the junior ranks are asked to provide for their families on a wage categorized as low-income per HUD standards. If the families do not have the right financial tools, one unforeseen hardship can be the catalyst for an irrecoverable financial downward spiral.
During these times of crisis, STEP is dedicated to providing assistance in the form of grants for emergency food, rent, utilities, critical baby items, auto repair and other emergency needs. STEP believes we ask our present and former uniformed service members to endure enough stress, in service to our country, through long hours, long deployments and separation from their extended family support networks; meeting the household’s critical needs during times of financial hardship shouldn’t be allowed to become the final stressor that breaks a service member’s resolve. They take care of us, let’s take care of them!
